Evangelical Presbyterian Church’s Position on Worship Music

We the Session of EP Church believe that the hymns and songs in worship should be chosen based on the merits of the lyrics and musical excellence of the song. We believe it is not a requirement for us to agree with every tenet of an author’s theological views to include their music in our worship services. The Bible and Church History are full of examples where God uses broken people to produce God-glorifying works — Solomon was apostate but wrote inspired Scripture; Martin Luther was racist but produced great theological works and hymns, and Jonathan Edwards owned slaves but produced timeless writings and preached sermons, to name a few. Likewise, we do not believe the beliefs or practices of a contemporary source necessarily disqualify the use of books, music, or products produced by that source. Therefore, we will continue the practice of including worship music (contemporary and hymnal) based on the merits of a song’s lyrics and its musical excellence and that the choice of music be left up to the Sr. Pastor and the Director of Music.
