March 18 and 19
What is the Gospel? What do we believe about Jesus? What’s the Church all about?
Should I come to an Inquirer’s Weekend?
The Inquirer’s Weekend is encouraged for people who want to know more about Christ and his church. It’s the first step toward joining our church, but it is also more than that. There is no assumption or pressure that those who attend will join our church. This seminar provides a context for those who are impacted by our ministry to spend more time with us reflecting on the gospel and the church. The weekend provides an opportunity for in depth discussion with our pastors, elders and staff.
So if you want to know more about the gospel, Jesus and His church please join us. Because the weekend is highly integrated, we do ask you that attend on both Friday evening and Saturday morning. We will offer this weekend quarterly so that you can find a weekend that works well for you. We will provide materials, food and refreshments and childcare (as requested in advance).
Where will we meet?
We will meet in the church library unless the group size requires that we move to the fellowship hall or another classroom. When we have a complete registration we will notify you of the exact meeting place at the church.
When and how do I register?
You can register by contacting Dot in the church office(737-2300) (firstname.lastname@example.org), signing up in the Narthex or signing up online (www.epcnewark.org). If you register by email please let us know how many will attend and whether you need child care. Please register by Wednesday, March 16th.
Friday Evening Dessert and Part I (7:30-9:00PM)
- Session I: What is the Gospel—Accepted by God. We will take an in depth look at the gospel through two important passages of Scripture: Romans 3:21-26 and Luke 15:11-32. We will consider what God has done for us in the gospel, what our response to the gospel is, and why it all matters.
Saturday Morning Breakfast Sessions II and III (8:30-11:30AM)
- Continental Breakfast – (8:00-8:30)
- Session II (8:30-9:50) – What do we believe about Jesus? Building on the prior evening we will study the core teaching on who Jesus is as God the Son, and how he relates to God the Father and the Holy Spirit. Next, we will look at the guidelines the Scriptures give to us regarding basic beliefs for the Christian faith. Finally, we will see how we as a particular branch of Jesus’ church confess our faith to one another and the world.
- Session III (10:00-11:30) – What is the church all about? In this final session we will consider what it means that Jesus promised not only to save us, but to build a church that would prevail. What is the church? Who belongs to the church? What is my role and responsibility within the church? Has Jesus given any direction to how the church is to be arranged and connected with other churches? How in the world did all these “denominations” come about? Finally, how are we at EPC Newark living out our lives as the church of Jesus Christ?
